Masterclass on Jathiswarams – By Dr. Sharanya Sriram
Objective:
This session is designed to help students of intermediate level and above to master the Jatiswaram, a pivotal form in Carnatic music that bridges the gap between basic technical exercises and complex performance pieces. The workshop focuses on honing rhythmic precision (Laya) and raga clarity through the lens of structured swara patterns.
Approach:
Students will be guided through a systematic breakdown of rhythmic structures. The session employs a strategy, breaking down intricate melodic sequences into manageable rhythmic units. Through guided, hands-on practice, students will learn to maintain unwavering Tala alignment while executing the rapid-fire swara patterns that define this technical form.

Prerequisite: Students should have a firm grasp of Alankaras and three basic Varnams

Scope/ Learning outcomes :
The session will explore Jatiswarams across diverse scales, including a Melakarta Raga, a Janya Raga and a Raga featuring Gamaka-heavy phrases.
The curriculum will broadly cover:
- Jati-Swara Correlation: Identifying how rhythmic syllables (Jatis) translate into melodic notes.
- The Concept of Poruttam: Exploring aesthetic mathematical endings within swara sequences.
- Gati Bedham: Introduction to singing patterns in different speeds and rhythmic gaits
(e.g., Chaturasram vs. Tisram).
