Shri Purandaradāsa’s Navarthna Mālika workshop

by Vidwan Shri Hariharan (Bangalore Brothers)

Purandara Dāsaru (1484–1564) is a prominent composer of Dasa sahithya, a poetic form of the Madhwa philosophy. He is widely referred to as the Pitamaha of Carnatic Music in honour of his significant contribution to Carnatic music. He wrote about 5,00,000 compositions in number, called Dasara Padagalu.

The Navaratna Mālika by Shri Purandaradāsa is a collection of nine gems (Navaratna) devotional hymns (Mālika/Kritis) dedicated to Lord Vishnu and his avatars, primarily set to music with the signature "Purandara Vittala". This collection is renowned for its simple Kannada lyrics and high emotional content, often sung as part of Dāsa Sahitya to promote bhakti (devotion).

About the workshop:

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to learn and internalize all nine padas with devotion, discipline and precision. The workshop also places special emphasis on the ragas associated with each krithis and explores the appropriate musical approach to rendering them with authenticity.

This set is traditionally rendered in a group format (Gosti Gayana) during Purandara Dasa Punyadinam Celebrations.

Prerequisite: Students should have learnt at least 4 Varnams and 8 krithis
