The nottuswara (nōṭṭusvaras, from "note" + "swaras") / noteswarams are a set of 39 composition in Carnatic music by Muthuswami Dikshitar in Shankarabharanam ragam. They really do occupy a unique place in Carnatic music. Their simple melodic structure—often set in Western major scales—makes them accessible for beginners, while their roots in Indian classical style give them depth that even veteran musicians can appreciate. It’s fascinating how Muthuswami Dikshitar, inspired by Western band music during the colonial era, created these compositions that elegantly blend two musical worlds.
This workshop aims to introduce students to rare Nottuswarams, offering them a unique glimpse into these simple yet historically rich compositions.
