Thiruppavai Workshop

By Anahita & Apoorva

(Intermediate to advanced level)

Andal, also known as Godhai, Nachiyar, or Godha Devi, is the only female Alvar and is revered as an incarnation of Bhumi Devi, the earth goddess and consort of Lord Vishnu. Like the other Alvars, she is associated with the Sri Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. Raised by Periyalvar in Srivilliputhur, Andal grew up as a devout worshipper of Vishnu, particularly in his form as Krishna.

Believed to have lived during the 8th century CE, Andal composed two profound Tamil works. Thiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi, which continue to be recited with devotion during the sacred Margazhi season.

The Thiruppavai comprises thirty pasurams (verses) in praise of Perumal (Vishnu) and forms a part of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the revered collection of hymns by the twelve Alvars. Often described as "the seed of all the Vedas," the Thiruppavai is believed to encapsulate the essence of the Vedas, just as a seed holds within it the potential of the entire tree.

About the workshop:

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to learn and internalize all thirty verses of the Thiruppavai with devotion, discipline, and precision. The program also places special emphasis on the ragas associated with each pasuram and explores the appropriate musical approach to rendering them with authenticity.
